Anglo-Normandy Squadron History by Gérard Bréon

LOn the 16th of February, 2000, Georges BRU, Secretary General of the Company of Musketeers, together with Bernard Thoyer, a member of the Company General Staff, paid a visit to the Normandy village of FONTAIN-LA-MALLET, accompanied by their wives.
They were there for a number of reasons. First, because of the close ties of friendship they already had with those Musketeers living in Normandy, but more importantly to induct a new Musketeer, Pierre-Yves Baudry, into the Company. We didn’t know then that there was also another reason for their visit.
The ceremony took place in “La Fontaine Fleurie”, the village restaurant run by Philippe and Carmen Leprovost. Philippe was the longest serving member Musketeer in Normandy, having been inducted into the illustrious Company in 1989 at the urging of his wife. Carmen originally came from the Department of the Gers, and was an Ambassador for the region. Carmen is passionate about her Gers, and had passed on this passion to us. She was inducted in her turn in 1999 as a Muse of the Company, the last to be so named in the last century.
It was during the event in 2000 that the two representatives of the Company presented Musketeer Gerard BREON, one of the many Musketeers residing in the area (the list of names can be found on the following page), with the Statutes of the Company of Musketeers of Armagnac, with the request that he create an Anglo-Normandy Squadron.
Once everyone had got over their surprise, we immediately set to work to prove that their confidence was not misplaced, both in our attachment to the Company and our ability to rise to the challenge.
The first Chapter was duly held on the 29th of May, 2001, in the prestigious surroundings of the Dormy House hotel and restaurant, high on the famous cliffs of Etretat (in accordance with the request of the Company representatives).
Given that the future Squadron would be Franco-British in character, contact was made with various personalities, both French and British, so that there would be a representative mix of guests at the event.
During the evening, five people were inducted by Alain de Taillac, Aide-de-Camp to Aymeri de Montesquiou, Captain of the Company of Musketeers of Armagnac, assisted by Jerome Canlorbe and Bernard Thoyer, members of the General Staff.
The first five inductees were:
- Charles Revet, President of the Seine-Maritime County Council
- Keith Martin, President of the Normandy Region of the Franco-British C.C.I (a British subject)
- Jean-Pierre Mabille, Chief Quality Controller, Renault Cars, Sandouville plant.
- Ludovic Hamel, Pastry Chef, and creator of the “gateau des Muses” for the occasion
- Peter Lacey, Company Director (a British subject)
The inaugural event was a great success, and for the Squadron to be fully effective, all that remained was to organize a Chapter in England.
This took place on the 1st of June, 2002 in the Orangery of Longleat House, the seat of Lord Alexander Thynne, Marquis of Bath. Lord Bath, together with Mike Williams, Director-General of the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce, was inducted during the evening.
Mike was later to become responsible for the Squadron’s activities in England.
